News, notes and letters from Classmates:
JANUARY 2012
March 16-18, classmates will gather in Chicago for a special three-day mini-reunion honoring BILL HAARLOW. The Les Turner ALS Foundation there is holding a special dinner honoring Bill’s family for their support over the years, beginning when Bill first contracted the still-incurable disease from which he died in 2002. DENNIS KELLER has taken the lead role in rallying classmates.
If you have any questions, or to sign up, please call Dennis Keller (630-574-1900 or dkeller@devry.com) or Kim Tupper (630-574-1970 or ktupper@devry.com). We hope to see you in March!

Dear Classmates,
I have had Parkinson’s disease (PD) for about 15 years, for some 10 of which I have been one of the leaders of the Brooklyn Parkinson Group (BPg) here in New York. Among other things, PD makes one relatively slow and inactive, staying home and staying seated, often depressed, which is a sentence to misery if not death at the hands of this incurable, progressive disease. BPg provides free-of-charge, largely-arts-based programs that attract and entertain while they provide indispensable exercise, fun, and even joy. Once a week we are taught modern dance by world-class professional dancers of the Mark Morris Dance Group. Believe it or not, dance has a magical effect on people with PD whose symptoms seem to fall away while they dance. We also sing (often while we dance, but separately as well), which is good for the speech problems that often come with PD.
My pet program (which I helped to design after studying fitness for over a year at night and on weekends) provides fitness training to get people into shape to cope with the progression of the disease as it increasingly tries to inhibit one from performing the normal activities of daily living. Our fitness program is offered at two locations: the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University and the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA.
The Brooklyn Parkinson Group is a non-profit organization which depends on tax deductible donations. Please see more on our website at www.brooklynparkinsongroup.org. Please call me at 718-522-1572 if you have any questions.
Our class is of an age that, unfortunately, more and more members will likely be diagnosed with PD. Currently there is no cure for the disease, and, as far as I know, none on the horizon. However, the currently available medications can work quite well, and for a number of years. But it is very important that, as soon as possible, one get diagnosed and begin appropriate exercise and medication to reduce the risk of falls and preserve the quality of life -- under the supervision of a neurologist who has a specialty in movement disorders, if not PD, specifically.
PD is a fascinating disease, with many quirky aspects and much variety of symptoms among patients. Living with PD for a number of years, especially if one spends a lot of time with patients in varying stages of progression, with different neurologists and medication regimens, as I have, one cannot help but learn quite a bit of useful information about finding help and coping with the disease. I would be happy to give any help I can to any classmate who thinks he may have the disease or knows someone who might -- on a confidential basis, of course.
With fond regards,
Carroll Neesemann

The
Precept '63 initiative launched spring of this year had a slow start,
both from a technical and content point of view. Clearly, there remains
excellent potential for this to become an active forum for dialog among
us. To find the Class of 63 forum for discussion, log into TigerNet,

they went through and how they have responded to the loss of his

Between
March and April of this year, Martha Luz and I walked about half of the
Camino de Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. The following is a
brief summary of our experience. I also attach two of my favorite
photos, one of Martha Luz heading towards the Canal de Castilla, and the
other of the two of us at a wine bar in León with a number of German
pilgrims at the end of our trip, Martha Luz at the far left.
The
Way of St. James, a nearly 800-kilometer pilgrimage through northern
Spain, provided us with an adventure of body, mind, spirit and palate.
Throughout the walk, we had the choice of the silence and solitude of
long stretches of vineyards, olive groves, and fields of barley and
wheat, the camaraderie and support of local citizens and fellow
pilgrims, and the intimacy of each other. In the process, we found in
ourselves a mutual commitment to our goal and to each other that
surprised us both. Ultimately, that is what the Camino de Santiago de
Compostela offers: an opportunity to take a break from whatever other
roads we have been on, and focus on one in particular that provides
peace and clarity that help us to discover more about ourselves and the
ones we love. To the Camino we shall return.

CLASS DINNER IN NYC on FEB 18, 2010Sixty
strong, the class held a much deserved celebration of itself on
February 18 at the Princeton Club in New York. Twelve states were
represented, a good omen for attendance at similar dinners planned for
other cities over the next three years in anticipation of our fiftieth
reunion. One classmate couldnt make it, but that didnt dissuade his
wife from coming, further proof-as if such proof were needed-of our
continuing attractiveness.
Class President Philip Cannon, once
again the model of political correctness, greeted everyone. The dinner
speakers-Joel Rosenman of Woodstock fame and first time novelist Selden
Edwards- spoke about "Back to the Future "and led the lively discussion
that followed.

A LETTER from SELDEN EDWARDS to ALL CLASSMATES
November 15, 2009
Classmates,
Rather
than fill up valuable PAW column space, I thought I'd write a group
email to catch you up on progress with THE LITLE BOOK. Needless to
say, it's been a wonderful journey, sort of an unbelievable one,
actually.
PAPERBACK: The paperback came out in June, so
that's what you see now in airports and bookstores. It became the
Costco featured book for July, which meant a full page in the
newsletter (below), with its 8-million circulation. Then some of you
already know about the Bill Clinton mention (also below); that one
really was unbelievable.
BOOK GROUPS: Now, lots of book
groups are reading it, and I make lots of appearances, either in person
of by Skype and iChat. Those computer "appearances" are very
successful and work very well. If you know any book groups looking for
a good read, recomment TLB and spread the word about Skype/iChat.
BALTIMORE:
This past summer, as you know, Bob and Townsend Kent very graciously
invited me to Baltimore and hosted a splendid '63 evening at their club
(photo below). While there, a great interviewer named Bill Thompson
tracked me down. Thompson travels all over and interviews tons of
authors with a tiny (cigaret pack-sized) digital recorder, and edits
them with his Mac. Then he posts them on this very special website.
Check out this other interviews by clicking on "Authors" up at the
top. He came to the Kent home and interviewed me at their Baltimore
kitchen table; you can picture the author there. Very cool.
THANK
YOU: Again, thank you for your generous support of this book. There is
no question that one of the main reasons for its success is the
fabulous support it has received by my '63er friends. You are indeed
pure class!

And
speaking of photo ops, this summer in Baltimore, Townsend and BOB KENT
rounded up a group of Balmer classmates to discuss THE LITTLE BOOK with
its author (sitting), and hosted a splendid dinner at their club. Seen
here is the group at the legendary Ivy Bookstore. They are, from left
CHIP MARKELL, CHARLIE GREENLEAF, Kent, VINCE HOCK, DON MCPHERSON, BILL
SCHMICK, MIKE MCBRIDE, DAN DENT, TIM CALLARD, and BILL MULES, who led a
details-rich tour of Ft. McHenry.

Whos
that on the left? The smiling face on the right is obviously our own
DICK KRUGMAN, professor of pediatrics and Dean of the University of
Colorado Medical School, who in May was celebrated with an honorary
degree from Wake Forest. The Vice President came along to cheer.
June 2009
While
some of us were gathered in Princeton to help the Class of 1964
celebrate their 45th, a group of classmate roommates gathered at the
Outer Banks home of Nancy and MIKE LEWARS in a reunion of their own.
They are, from left, DENNY GRUBBS, Lewars, BOB BLICKENSTAFF, Krugman,
and DAVE GORDON. Rumor has it that the recumbent guy in shades to the
left is JAY SCHROEDER.
